Voluntary organisations are constantly pointed out as as appropriate and suitable arenas for integration and social inclusion. Engagement in civic organisations does not only contribute to skills development but also to the formation of friendships, identity and a sense of belonging. Integration is nonetheless paradoxical; all groups define themselves in contrast to others. The stronger the collective identity, the harder it is to include those who are different.
This project will examine how inclusive civic organisations are towards groups which are different due to economy, ethnicity, culture or gender factors. Data on both individuals and organisations will be used.
