In volunteerism research issues related to the integration of immigrants are challenging, as integrating both parents and children is only achieved to a limited extent.
This project investigates the integration work in the Møhlenpris district in Bergen, Norway. The project will have a qualitative approach focussing on the motivation for volunteering, integration and immigration issues, the establishment of meeting places and the cooperation of local communities in the multicultural neighbourhoods.
Initiatives by the sports club Djerv and the creation of the Vitality Center in 2003 in Bergen's most urbane and relatively multicultural district are regarded as a success story precisely with regard to improving the integration of immigrants. In the form of a limited case study, the project will seek to identify success criteria and challenges in relation to the revitalized volunteer involvement in Møhlenpris district.
There will be 15-20 qualitative interviews with residents participating in the various activities, leadership in both the municipality of Bergen and the volunteerism coordination centre, officials, parents, etc. associated with Djerv. The interviews will focus on questions about the integration of children, parents and residents in the local community. The project will primarily determine immigrants' motivations for their involvement, but also the associations’ and clubs’ challenges related to engaging immigrants (among other things in terms of gender and age) as both officials and participants in activities.
As part of the larger survey of association life in Hordaland, this project will serve as a complementary qualitative research project aimed toward specific challenges
