The book is an analysis of the development of the local organsiation society with emphasis on the period after 1980. The book shows that the millennium change represents an important dividing line for voluntary organisation in Norway: It marks the end of the popular movements' domination in the Norwegian organisation society.
Less committing and formal activites concentrated around local communities, culture and spare time are instead on the increase. The organsiaton society has changed from being conflict and societally orientated toward an consensus and member orientation. The organisations' local and national levels lead increasingly their own lifes.
The authors argue that these changes are linked to changes in society, in particular to increased individualisation, changes in gender roles and in technology. The local organiation society reflects society in general.
However, the interaction between the organsiation society and society in general goes both ways. The types of organisations individuals choose to engage with and the form of this participation has consequences for the kind of civil society and democracy we get. The changes which are currently taking place are so encompassing that one can speak of a new type of democracy.
