This report investigates, based on different data sources, the social inequalities that characterize participation in voluntary organizations.
The first part of the report summarizes the main arguments of central theories of social justice with special emphasis on Amartya Sen’s theory. Sen’s theory allows linking social justice with participation in voluntary organizations by considering participation as an important element of the capbilities a society should allocate in a fair way.
The second part of the report is devoted to the empirical analysis of the social inequalities characterizing participation in voluntary organizations. The analysis is based on individual characteristics such as age, gender, ethnicity, income, and education.
